work was organizational development. During her graduate studies she had a
teaching assistantship for public speaking courses. It was for her work
there that she was awarded “most outstanding teaching assistant” by students
in 1999.
Caroline teaches courses that primarily focus on the development of oral and
written communication skills. In addition to writing and presenting,
research; professional communication; ethics; group work and social issues
are central to these courses. The courses are tied to a semester theme that
is grounded in science and technology and that changes from year to year.
Themes that have been explored include pseudoscience, fast food, medical
technology, disasters, technology and the environment and crime and
technology.
Courses taught include the Fundamentals of Communication which provides
students with an introduction to research, citation, speaking and writing;
Connections I and Connections II which explore societal issues and their
relationships with science and technology; Advanced Communications which
illustrates the value of competent communication in professional jobs; and
the Senior Capstone courses for which she is responsible for managing
students’ work and progress.
Caroline’s current research interests lie in organizational culture, group
dynamics, integrated curriculums and learning communities.
