Cool things to do at Marshall

Go to a play at the University Theater.  Tickets are free for students.

Go to a game.  All sports schedules are at http://herdzone.cstv.com/  Football tickets are free for students for most games.

Go to a concert.  The Music Department has lots of them, usually free.

Go to a lecture on campus.  I will post and announce some of them as the semester goes on.

Go to the Marshall Artist's Series.  Students can get free tickets to events.

Keep fit with the fitness center

Office of Student Activities has other cool stuff to do, including a trip to a Cincinnati Reds game and trips to other football games.

Join a Fraternity or Sorority  Join an interest club Marshall has lots!

Go to the International Film Festival in October.

Help build a Habitat for Humanity House.

Cool Things to do in West Virginia and our Region

Go see Mountain Stage in Charleston.  Sundays at 6:00- fairly cheap tickets and great acts.

Go to the Huntington Museum of Art.  They have a show on Marilyn Monroe through September 9 and a great collection of glass and folk art and 20th century American art.

Paramount Performing Arts Center in Ashland KY.

Community Theatre in Huntington is alive and well.  Hello Dolly is coming in October starring Beth McVey, a local artist who has starred in Broadway Musicals.

Big Sandy Superstore Arena has lots of events. 

Join a local congregation.  Here is a partial list

Go to a local festival The  West Virginia Pumpkin Festival in Milton is well known.  Or try Chilifest here in Huntington.

Learn about Archeology Weekend in Moundsville, October 13-14.

Go rafting, canoeing, hiking, fishing or hunting.  More on local parks

Course Description:

UNI 101 is a course designed especially to help new students adjust to Marshall University.  This is a seminar course which means that students are active participants in the class on a daily basis and share the learning process with each other and with the instructor.  UNI 101 is a one credit hour course that is graded credit/no credit.  That means you will not receive a letter grade in the course but you will receive one credit towards graduation if you successfully complete the course

Computer Requirements:

Access to a Pentium computer with WebCT, Internet, and current Marshall Microsoft Windows packages.

Desired Learner Outcomes/Objectives:

When finished with this course you should be able to:

 

  • Identify appropriate campus resources (Library, Tutoring, Writing Center, College Advising office, WebCT Vista, computer system, Marshall Artists Series, Sports, Student government and clubs, Health Center, Counseling Services) and how to access them.
  • Identify and use appropriate study skills for rigorous College of Science curriculum.
  • Begin to understand the critical thinking process and how to apply it in your life.
  • Assess the components of a safe and healthy lifestyle.
  • Manage time and money more efficiently.
  • Evaluate the career options in various majors.
  • Plus, I hope you have some fun and make some friends!

We will read and discuss the book, “The Glass Castle” in the context of the goals of the course. 

 Evaluation/Measurement of Learner Outcomes:

  • We will examine campus resources available to you.
  • We will learn to manage classes, study, time and money more wisely.
  • We will learn more about career options available.
  • We will learn to use the system effectively to enroll for next semester.
  • We will read and discuss the book, “The Glass Castle” in the context of this effort.

Assessment Evaluation Methods:

To earn a grade (credit, CR) in this course, you must do the following:

 

  • Attend scheduled class meetings to get the full benefit in this seminar.  If you have more than 2 absences during the semester, you will not receive credit in the course.
  • Participate in class discussions.
  • Attend at least 2 campus cultural events (MU Theatre, Music Department Events,  Birke Art Gallery exhibitions, MU Artists Series performances).  Please send me an e-mail to describe your reaction to the event.
  • Read and discuss the book, “The Glass Castle.”
  • Record at least four journal entries on your reaction to this first semester at Marshall: 
    • First impressions
    • First exam week/initial grades
    • Preparing to enroll for next semester and picking your courses
    • Study for finals/wrap up semester

Class Policies:

Cell Phone Use

Please, as a courtesy to the instructor and others, don’t use your cell phones in class or lab.  If you have an emergency call, use the vibrate option and step outside to take the call.

 

Attendance Policy:

This class requires faithful attendance. Tardiness is also discouraged, but is better than absence. It is the student’s responsibility to meet with instructor to discuss absences due to illness or other reasons
